Archaeology on Ice:
a Review of Historical Archaeology in
Antarctica
David L. Harrowfield1
BSTRACT
New Zealand has played a major role in the development
of archaeology in Antarctica.
The Ross Dependency (administered by New Zealand) has
numerous important
sites dating from the period of exploration known as
the Historic Era (1895–1917).
Attempts were made to clean up historic sites in the
1950s and 1960s. The 1970s
saw the first true archaeological investigations;
professional archaeologists became
involved in the late 1980s. These developments are
traced and the contributions of
archaeologists and others from Australia, Argentina,
Chile, the United States and
the United Kingdom are noted. There is great potential
for further archaeology in
Antarctica; however, any future work must take place
under strict controls.
