General
Description:
The incumbent of this position is responsible for planning and supervising all
archaeological work within the territory. Assignments are carried out
under the administrative direction of the Historic Preservation Officer and the
Deputy Historic Preservation Officer, Office of the Governor.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for surveying all
archaeological sites in the territory
- Responsible for conducting archaeological
surveys in areas of known or potential development activity in cooperation
with federal and/or territorial agencies
- Responsible for designing a systematic
archaeological testing at the most significant sites; limited
archaeological testing at the most significant site
- Responsible for preparing professional
reports of archaeological work for publication
- Responsible for the Project Notification
Review System major project site visits and filing of all site visit
reports
- Responsible for attending Project
Notification Review System Board Meetings
- Responsible for preparing or assisting members
of the public in the preparation of National Register nomination forms and
letters for significant archaeological historic properties
- Responsible for cooperating with the
office Historian to ensure that federally assisted projects comply with
the National Historic Preservation Act of 1996, as amended
- Responsible for developing, updating, and
distributing standardized recording forms for documentation of historic
sites
- Responsible for assigning site numbers to
newly identified historic properties and providing site numbers to
archaeologists who conduct surveys in the territory and maintaining the
historic property of the territory
- Responsible for cooperating with and
assisting overseas archaeologists, scholars, students, and associations
with archaeological and historic preservation related information requests
and queries, including logistical support
- Responsible for the development of
archaeological aspects of a public awareness plan, including the writing
of press releases as appropriate
- Responsible for cooperation with the
Historic Preservation Officer in developing comprehensive historic
preservation plans
- Perform all other duties and
responsibilities as assigned
Knowledge
and Ability:
- Knowledge of Polynesian prehistory, or
North American Prehistory
- Knowledge of archaeological field methods;
administrative procedures and regulations, especially related to the
Section 106 36 CRF 800 regulations
- Knowledge of the National Register
Program, and Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended
- Knowledge of computer word processing;
database management, Geographic Information Systems (Arch View)
- Knowledge of public information education;
Samoan Language
- Ability to communicate effectively with
agencies in the federal and territorial governments regarding archaeology
and historic preservation issues, as well as professional and historic
preservation organizations through written and oral mediums
- Ability to cooperate and interact well
with others
Academic
and Experience Requirements:
- Applicant must have a Master's degree in
Archaeology or Anthropology, or related field from an accredited
college/university plus 4 years of work related experience; 2 years of
which was at a supervisory level. Years of progressively responsible
working experience may be substituted for portion of the academic
requirement. Salary will adjusted according to experience.
