Maori & Early European Historic Site Opens The Otuataua Stonefields Historic Reserve will officially be opened by Prime Minister Helen Clark on Saturday 10th February 2001. A powhiri will be held at Makaurau Marae in Mangere at 9.30 am followed by an official ceremony at the Otuataua Stonefields at 10.30 am. A commemorative brochure has been produced to mark the opening and will be available during the opening weekend. Guided tours of three available walks - a historical walk, a geographical walk and a botanical walk, will ensure visitors are fully informed about the manmade artefacts and natural resources around the site.
Replanting Options For One Tree Hill Auckland City is currently evaluating options for replacing the Monterey pine on the summit of One Tree Hill, which was felled last October.

New HPT Chief Executive The new Chief Executive of the Historic Places Trust will be former Te Papa senior manager Dr Bill Tramposch, Board Chairperson Dame Catherine Tizard announced today. Dr Tramposch succeeds Elizabeth Kerr, who took up a new appointment as Chief Executive of Creative New Zealand in November.

Kerikeri slate writings a poem - New Zealand Herald The scratchings on a slate found at Kerikeri are not the remains of a 170-year-old mistake as first thought but the intentional recording of the Maori author's feelings.
Translation of the faint scratchings on the writing slate have revealed a Ngapuhi "pao," or poem.

Slate find bears early sample of Maori writing - New Zealand Herald Online - Newspaper Some time between 1824 and 1829, a young Maori student used a sharp implement to write on a slate while at one of New Zealand's first schools. Now, more than 170 years later, the slate is being heralded as a significant snapshot of our early history after it was unearthed at Kerikeri still bearing the writing scratched in Maori.
TRUST TO PROSECUTE OVER WAIKANAE BURIAL SITE The Maori gravesite damaged during earthworks for a Waikanae Beach subdivision is believed to span several generations, according to Historic Places Trust archaeologist, Karen Greig. Included among the 11 skeletons discovered on the site is that of a small girl buried with her favourite necklace. The Trust is taking court action against contracting companies Payne Sewell Ltd and Higgins Contractors Ltd under Section 99 of the Historic Places Act 1993, which deals with the protection of archaeological sites.
MAORI MIDDEN PROTECTED BY COVENANT An historic Maori midden at Kohutuhutu Road, Raumati, believed to be more than 400 years old, has been protected by a covenant under the Historic Places Act.
