'Errors' in trust's rescue package
The Historic Places Trust has withdrawn its proposal to classify the former Mercury Energy buildings in Newmarket after its report was found to be inaccurate.
Trust heritage adviser Antoine Coffin said the proposal to classify the Auckland buildings had been withdrawn "so we can change some of the facts in the proposal."

Tauranga megalith hunter
An Australian researcher is comming to Tauranga in June to hunt for a lost civilisation. Rex Gilroy of Tamworth, Australia, hopes to find a race of highly advanced megalith-building people developed in the Bay of Plenty and other parts of Austrilasia.

Wimpy commissioners agree to plough under our heritage
Instead of standing up to the roading engineers and declaring that Auckland's remaining volcanoes were henceforth off limits, the commissioners wimped out. In that, they were not alone. The Department of Conservation and the Auckland Regional Council, both charged with protecting our heritage, were just as bad.
For example they acknowledge that the proposed "cut at the base of the cone" would have "a significant visual impact" and "therefore adversely affect a heritage feature."

Mystery portrait uncovered
Archaeologists have unearthed a mystery on a Queenstown building site.
The charred remains of a portrait were discovered on the site of the former Mt Cook building this week during an excavation led by Dr Jill Hamel, of Dunedin.

The finder of a pre-European Maori tiki has returned to South Canterbury's Shag Point site where it was discovered, with an archaeologist from the Ngai Tahu Development Corporation.
